What is better than after a day of adventuring to come home for a roaring fire?! One thing we always wanted was a log burning stove and it is great to be able to try these fuel options from White Horse Energy!
We have been trying out the firewood and briquettes from White Horse Energy who not only supply high quality kiln dried firewood but also briquettes and wood pellets. They deliver all over the U.K. and have next day delivery-handy when you run out and it is definitely stove weather!
We were really keen to try their briquettes as they are a great alternative to traditional firewood and we haven’t used them before. They are basically compressed recycled wood waste. They contain 50% more than the energy content of a LARGE crate of kiln dried firewood, as they are denser and contain less moisture. Another reason we were keen to try was they are far cheaper too!

The Ecoblaze™ Nestro Briquette
This briquette is perfect for stoves but can also be used in pizza ovens if you have one. The briquettes are compressed biomass wood materials that is kiln-dried to create a densely packed briquette.
It is said to burn with a bright flame and I can definitely agree! The fire looks excellent when burning one of these briquettes. We have been adding them to an already established fire using the White Horse Energy firefighters and kindling.

The briquette burns for about 45 mins which is great as you don’t need to have a number of logs on the fire. We only used half of one briquette as they are so huge and that was absolutely adequate to give a great flame and a really excellent amount of heat is given off. I was very impressed how much heat from the burning of just half of one of these briquettes. When the briquette stopped burning there was a very noticeable drop in the temperature of the room.

When burning it slowly falls apart as it has been compressed and looks great on the fire!
As well as giving an excellent burning time and flame they are also said so produce only a small amount of ash (which can quickly clog up the stove!) and I agree there is definitely a lot less ash than when burning logs!

You get 5 briquettes per bag, and we only use half a briquette and it is ample for a great flame and heating the room!
The Ecoblaze RUF Fire Block
This fire block is a great value eco-friendly biomass briquette suitable for smaller stoves, fire pits and chimineas. These blocks are carbon neutral and made from 100% organic hardwoods-great stuff!
The recycled wood is compressed into its stackable brick shape and then kiln dried to a moisture content of less than 12%.
Again we added this to an already burning fire and it burned for 40 mins without any further addition of any wood or briquettes needed. It had a great flame and gave off plenty of heat too.

Ecoblaze RUF blocks are wrapped tightly in 10kg bags with minimal yet sturdy plastic packaging to ensure that no moisture gets into the bag. The packs includes 12 blocks total are a great size to just add for the fire. I think these would be ideal to take when we go camping to use on fire heaters !
Kiln Dried Wood
Firstly the logs come from a sustainable source and are given a guarantee by White Horse Energy. The logs are ready to burn and because they are dried to an average moisture content of under 20% they give nearly double the amount of heat from the logs.
The White Energy logs burnt well and a nice clean flame, you could tell that the logs were well dried.

You can get the wood boxed or in a crate, depending on storage space available.

It is law in England to ban wet fire logs from being burned in the home, due to the particulates given off by damp firewood. Firewood suppliers and also not allowed to sell wet firewood in crates smaller than 2m3. White Horse Energy are in the Ready to Burn scheme, which ensures all firewood they sell contains less than 20% moisture.
The firewood is kiln dried at controlled temperatures or seasoned to reach the correct moisture level.
Kindling and Natural Firelighters
One of the great things about White Horse Energy is that they provide everything you need for your stove in one delivery! This includes the kindling and firelighters to get your fire started before adding briquettes or logs.
The natural firelighters look like a little nest and are made from shredded fir dripped in wax-so really easy to get the fire going! They are clean and odourless-unlike other fire lighters we have used before.
You only need one per fire and with 200 in a box they will last for ages!!
The kindling is kiln-dried off cuts and you don’t need much to get a fire going, the box is packed with pieces and is great value!
We have found the firelighters and kindling to work really well together to start the fire before adding logs or briquettes.
Verdict
We have always burned logs (waste logs that have been dried) in our stove and not tried briquettes, however I think I am converted to briquettes! The amount of time they burn for compared to a log, they give off a great amount of heat and also they are formed from waste products. It is a great way to buy all you need for fires at home from firelighters to the logs and briquettes and so handy being delivered too!
