Snowdon (13.5km)

A great mountain for little legs to be able to do one of the three National 3 peaks! Can get busy as it is very popular!

Distance – 13.5km not an easy walk for little ones, but probably the easiest of the National three peaks. Includes some scrambling. Recommend for experienced little hikers.

Highest Point – 1085m

Toilets– at cafe at start of the route and at the cafe at the top once reopened

Food-cafe at bottom and the cafe at the top of Snowdon is due to reopen May 2023.

Parking-there is a carpark at Pen y Pass at the bottom of Snowdon but it is small and you need to book a space in advance. Or a really convenient option is the park and ride from Nant Peris, from about Easter the buses run every 15mins but are less frequent in the winter months. The bus takes you to the Snowdon information centre. The information centre also has toilets and a little cafe in case you need to stock up before going up Snowdon! This is where the Miners and Pyg tracks start from.

Note- make sure you have maps (this route is not a replacement for a map/gps), suitable clothing, food, water and first aid kit. Always be prepared for changes in the weather and circumstances.

The Route

There are various routes up Snowdon, we have walked different routes previously including Grib Goch, we knew the Miners Track was a good place to start with the kids. The plan was to make our way steadily to the top, with as many snack stops as we needed!

Start off on the miners route and passing the lakes with amazing views of Snowdon ahead.

Start of the Miners Track

At points it’s quite a scramble ad the path climbs but still ok for experienced little legs.

The track is really clear and easy to follow. It joins with the pyg track as you head up.

I am sure you know but always be prepared for it being colder at the top and make sure you have warm clothing and hats, even in the Summer it can still be chilly at the top.

Nothing prepared me for the top though, woah the queue to get a photo at the trig! We have always just gone straight to the trig for a photo and there has been hardly anyone there, couldn’t believe it! I wouldn’t normally have waited but it was a big point for the kids so we waited to get a photo at the top!

We went back down the same way, partly due to the bus ride back to the car and partly as we knew the kids had managed this route up. It is easy to follow the Pyg Track instead when the paths merge as they finish at the same point.

A great sense of achievement having been the highest person in Wales at the top!
