Mill Gill from Askrigg (7 km)

From Askrigg a nice gentle walk to see Mill Gill with some gorgeous views along the valley. A nice one if you just have a few hours and fancy seeing a waterfall!

Distance – 7 km

Food – cafe and pubs in the village.

Toilets – only at any pub/cafe you may visit.

Parking – There is a small car park in the village, head up through the village passing the church on your left and after the road bends to the right the car park is on the left. There are good bus links to the village which we have used, the bus stops in most villages along the valley.

Note- make sure you have maps (this route is not a replacement for a map/gps), suitable clothing, food, water and first aid kit. Always be prepared for changes in the weather and circumstances.

The Route

From the car park head down the Main Street through the village, taking the road to the right just before the church. Follow the road until there is a footpath off to your right through a field, the path is a lovely stone flag path.

Follow this path to some old buildings and cross the stream. Follow the path keeping the stream on your right.

There will be a path off to the right heading down hill to the waterfall, be careful as it can be slippy towards the bottom and on the stones around the fall.

Once you have enjoyed the height and impressive rumble of the waterfall head back up the little incline back to the main path. When reaching the main path turn right heading up hill. You will cross a wall into a field. Keep the wall to your right until another opening in the wall that takes you down to a small bridge across the stream. Cross the bridge and head round a little hill towards a farm gate.

Through the farm gate and you are onto a gravel track. Follow the track upwards until you reach a walled track at the top.

Follow this walled track to the right down hill, I love this track, there are great views along the valley from here!

Head down the track to a ford on the track and at this point take the path off to the right through a couple of fields with barns-watch out for owls which we have seen swoop out these barns!

Keep following the path until the path bears left towards some farms buildings, there is a wooden bridge to cross and there may be a number of cows in this area. Follow the footpath signs along the stream to go past the houses and come out on a road near the car park where you started.

To extend the route you can also continue up to Whitfield Gill for more waterfall watching!
